ake Homemade Floral Bath Salts

An easy way to treat yourself in under 10 minutes.

Something I love as much as flowers is a long, hot soak in my tub after a hard day on the farm. The hustle of everyday life can take a toll on us and I think we all deserve a moment of quiet. Even if that requires you to hide from your children behind a locked door with a glass of wine, go for it. You’ve earned it.

Another guilty pleasure of mine is buying expensive bath products and although I don’t think I will give up that habit completely, these homemade floral bath salts are a great way to stretch my budget. They also make the perfect DIY gift for any occasion and make you look super Martha Stewart-ish.

Since I started the farm, Epsom salts and I have become great friends. They are full of magnesium, a nutrient I am sure many people are deficient in. Epsom salts are inexpensive to purchase and dissolve nicely in hot water as they release magnesium which is absorbed through the skin, thereby helping relieve muscle tension. It is also said that Epsom salts pull toxins from our bodies.

Next, I add in coarse sea salt which helps make the water more buoyant and adds in more minerals. You can substitute in Himalayan sea salt as well but I don’t usually have that hiding around in my cabinets. It is important to note that iodized table salt should not be used. Sticking to a coarse salt is helpful so the particles do not settle to the bottom of the container. The next ingredient I use is baking soda. This helps dissolve the oils on your skin and will also absorb some of the essential oils to keep your bath salts smelling great.

This next part is where you can customize your bath soak to fit your personal needs. Maybe you are looking for a restful night’s sleep or you are like me and you have achy muscles you want to sooth. You can add in any combination of essential oils that you like. A few of my favorites are lavender and eucalyptus for a calming, soothing soak or rose absolute and calendula to help balance hormones and improve my mood

My favorite part of the recipe is sprinkling in dried flowers from our fields. Now, if you don’t have a barn full of dried flowers at your fingertips, you can find lots of organic dried flowers online. Some of my favorite dried flowers to use are rose petals, calendula, lavender and rosemary. I personally love adding them to the bath soak because they make it absolutely beautiful, especially if you are giving this as a gift. However, sometimes I leave these out when I am making larger batches for myself at home because they do require a little extra clean-up of the tub after I am finished.

I recommend storing the bath salts in air tight glass containers to keep the moisture out between uses. I store and gift mine in weck jars, which I purchase from Terrain. They come in all fun shapes and sizes but you could certainly use a mason jar as well.

Homemade Floral Bath Soak

  • 3 cups of Epsom salt

  • 1 cup of coarse sea salt

  • 1/2 cup baking soda

  • 1 tbsp. of jojoba oil (optional carrier oil) helps to mix the essential oils and spread them evenly.

  • 20 drops of your favorite essential oils

  • 2-3 tbsp. of dried flowers

Directions

1. Mix Epsom salt, coarse sea salt and baking soda in a large glass bowl using a spoon to stir.

2. In a separate small bowl, mix jojoba oil and essential oils together.

3. Pour oil mixture over the dry mixture and stir well making sure all the dry mixture is coated.

4. Add in dried flowers and gently stir.

5. Store in airtight glass container and enjoy!
